Xpujil is a town with great tourism potential as it is surrounded by the splendorous Mayan Culture. Located 187.65 miles from the city of Campeche, it will take you about four hours to get there coming from the capital of the state. The city is located in the kilometer 146 of the highway 186 (Escarcega-Chetumal); besides, visiting Chetumal is a must, the capital of Quintana Roo, it is also a border city with Guatemala limits, being the limit souther border of Mexico.
It is known that 700 years before Christ, the first human settlements where already established in the municipality of Calakmul; in the classic period of the Mayan culture, (322 b.C. to 925 a.C.) the region reached up to 50,000 inhabitants, who left the trace of its splendor in their majestic edifications.
The main tourist attraction in town is the archeological zone of Xpuhil, an uninhabited Mayan city. Its name comes from the plant known as “cola de gato” (cat’s tail) which is abundant in the region. Xpuhil is an enormous set of 17 architectonical groups and many platforms where people lived dispersed on a surface of 5 square kilometers. The first 4 buildings you can see are at the north of the highway are the structures named I, II” III, and IV. The I building is the most famous one, it is emblematic because of its three towers which distinguish it from other buildings of this type and age.
The benefit of visiting Xpujil is to be close to many other archeological zones, towns and interesting spots. This destination is the main city of the municipality of Calakmul, a big municipality in the south of the state of Campeche, which has the gratest number of Mayan archeological vestiges compared it with any other destination or region; besides, Xpujil almost borders with Guatemala, country that shares cultural richness with Mexico.
If visitor desire exploring out of town and municipality of Hopalchen, in the region known as Chenes, they can admire the pre-Columbian as well as the colonial architecture of old catholic temples, in places such as Bolonchen, Dzibalchen and Iturbide, among others. Taking the Escarcega-Chetumal highway, the traveler can take time to visit the ruins of Balamkú: the temple of the Jaguar.
Inside of the municipality of Calakmul there are also many other Mayan buildings such as: Becan, Calakmul, Chicanna, Hormiguero and Rio Bec; it is worth pinting out that the Biosphere Reserve of Calakmul, a natural area of more than 700,000 hectares, one of the biggest tropical reserves of the country. From time to time, in this part of the state, it is possible to admire the Jaguar in its natural environment, emblematic feline of the region, unfortunately an endangered species.
The town of Xpijil offers all the basic services to make tourists feel comfortable. The traveler will find lodging, food, gas, phone, and medical services. It is recommended to wear light, rain clothing if possible, as well as insect repellent, especially in summer, when the temperature reaches 30° C and it´'s rain season.
